Unpopular Opinions

Based on the % of black belts popped by USADA  (utilizing advance notice/one day per year testing at IBJJF), no less than 20% of the sport is juicing at the black belt level.

Masters Worlds is full of guys who look like cartoon characters at 40+ years of age.  (see above *ahem steroids and PEDs).

You can't be a competitor in a spectator sport and blame any criticism of your matches being boring by saying "you can't appreciate the nuances of high level grappling." Nah, you don't need to be a black belt to not be fooled by two guys both doing as little as possible to not lose and get paid and barely engaging for 10 minutes.

Quintet doesn't allow heel hooks because most guys wouldn't sign up if there were heel hooks.

If anyone else had shown up first day at black belt adult and won double gold with that many submissions, IBJJF would be gagging to death from slobbing their knob, but because it was Gordon Ryan there was less coverage. If Gordon had DQ'd himself by slapping and stalling anyone it would've been the biggest story in JiuJitsu, but instead we got fanboy worship justifying Cyborg's behavior instead of holding him to a standard befitting his accomplishments and all the usual talk about the sport and respect and honor and other BS.

UAEJJF is coming for IBJJF's status at the premier event (warm-up areas! Cash prizes! Earth shattering concepts, I know.)

If JiuJitsu becomes an Olympic sport, the podium will look different thanks to out of competition testing. It might be Jesus and hard work but it's also anabolic steroids and HGH and diuretics.

ADCC isn't a JiuJitsu tournament. It's not even a submission grappling tournament. It's a wrestling tournament that allows submissions.

TLI is keeping a low profile hoping the #metoo movement blows over and skips JiuJitsu.

I saw the IBJJF Pan Ams USADA flyer

Comically, it's taking place during the first day of the only group who's tested (black belt adult). Saw this lonesome lil' guy in the stairwell down to the warm up area. Then I was treated to watching some Teens and masters divisions...suspiciously some Teens looking comically ripped compared to just a year ago. High school sports is as a whole in America untested (something like three states have anything resembling a testing program) and the piss test cannot actually be supervised due to their status as minors et cetera. Even when it was in Texes with a multi million dollar program, 60 kids opted to not take the test. Nothing to see there. With several thousand competitors at he Pans, simple math is if you test 10 athletes (black adult belt divisions) out of even just 1000, you're only testing .01.
Pans will end up having something like several thousand total by the time it's all said and done. In a sport where the only testing is one day per year and entire divisions are completely untested....I mean, c'mon, is it all hard work and Jesus?

Depressing Friday News: Paulo Miyao Receives 2 Year Ban from USADA

Paulo Miyao receives 2 year ban from USADA for failed/positive test.

I'll have to do a podcast soon to discuss this topic I guess.
It's honestly just the death of the narrative that it's just hard work and the dream and technique conquers all in Jiu-Jitsu. I don't hold him responsible and others will want to discredit him and his accomplishments. The peanut gallery will boo and hiss and do what it does. I don't really care to crucify anyone. It simply confirms to me what I'd begun to suspect about competitive Jiu-Jitsu as of late and now forces some key questions: Why does it take so long to release the failed test? What's the point if Jiu-Jitsu only tests onece a year? Does Jiu-Jitsu really even want to be an Olympic sport or anything above a niche sport?

But the elephant in the room now in Jiu-Jitsu is the band-aid of a solution that is testing 10 black belts one day per year when they know it's the only time they would be tested (IF AT ALL).

Previously, I didn't want Jiu-Jitsu in the Olympics, if it means out of competition testing, full speed ahead, let's see how the podium changes with out of competition testing.
